How to Set Up Your Bagoplant: A Step-by-Step Guide

Welcome to the Bagoplant community! We're excited to help you create a thriving indoor garden with our innovative grow bag kits. Bagoplant grow bags offer unique benefits like air pruning and superior drainage, promoting healthier and more robust plant growth. In this blog post, we’ll guide you through the simple steps to set up your Bagoplant and get your indoor garden flourishing.

What You’ll Need:

  1. Bagoplant Grow Bag Kit (includes a grow bag, bamboo saucer, and LECA balls)
  2. Potting soil
  3. Water
  4. Your favourite houseplant

Step 1: Unpack Your Kit
Begin by unpacking your Bagoplant Grow Bag Kit. Inside, you’ll find:
  • A durable, eco-friendly grow bag
  • A bamboo saucer for water collection
  • A pouch of LECA balls for improved drainage and bottom watering

Step 2: Fill with Potting Soil
Open your grow bag and fill the bottom inch with high-quality potting soil. Quality soil should include equal parts perlite, compost, and topsoil. You can also consider adding bone meal to balance the pH, charcoal to remove any toxins, or additional LECA balls within the soil for plants that love extra moisture, like peace lilies. This soil will provide the necessary nutrients for your plant’s growth.

Step 3: Break up the Plant Rootball
If you are repotting from a traditional nursery pot, gently break up the rootball by massaging the roots until most of the old soil is removed. This will allow the roots to untangle and grow outward towards the bag walls, where they will become air-pruned. You can also rinse the rootball under a tap to remove the soil, but it is often easier and cleaner to work with a dry plant compared to a wet one.

Step 4: Plant Your Houseplant
Gently place the untangled rootball of your plant on top of the initial layer of soil. Adjust the height of the plant so that the leaves are positioned above the grow bag. Cover the roots with soil and press lightly around the base of the plant to secure it.

Step 5: Fill the Grow Bag with Soil

Using a spade, fill the rest of the grow bag with soil, ensuring the plant is centered. Distribute the soil evenly by holding the bag at the top side and lightly shaking it, tapping the sides of the bag, or gently dropping the bag on a flat surface. Continue adding soil until there is about 1.5 inches of space from the top of the grow bag.

Step 6: Add the LECA Balls to the Saucer
Spread the LECA balls evenly at the bottom of the bamboo saucer. The more LECA you add, the more excess water is retained for the plant. These lightweight, expanded clay aggregates improve drainage and aeration, ensuring your plant roots get the oxygen they need to thrive.

Step 7: Find the Perfect Spot
Place your Bagoplant Grow Bag Kit in a spot that suits your plant’s light requirements. Whether it needs direct sunlight, indirect light, or a shaded area, make sure to choose a location where your plant can thrive.

Step 8: Water Your Plant
Water your plant thoroughly from the top, allowing excess water to drain into the bamboo saucer. Bagoplant grow bags are designed to prevent overwatering by allowing excess moisture to escape, ensuring your plant roots remain healthy and rot-free.

Step 9: Monitor and Care
Keep an eye on your plant’s water needs, especially during the first few weeks as it adjusts to its new home. Bagoplant’s superior drainage system reduces the risk of overwatering, but it’s still essential to monitor your plant by checking the LECA balls to see if they are dry and watching the leaves for signs of underwatering (curling leaves) or overwatering (yellowing leaves). Bottom water your plant by adding water directly to the saucer whenever the LECA balls dry out. If the grow bag is consistently wet, remove it from the LECA ball tray and let it dry out on a dry saucer without LECA. If the bag is still wet after a couple of days, you may need to repot the plant, removing all the wet, muddy soil and replacing it with fresh, dry soil. Be sure to look up the care requirements for each individual plant, as they all have different needs for watering, fertilizer, and sunlight.

Additional Tips:

  • Rotate Your Plant: Rotate your Bagoplant every few weeks to ensure even growth and light exposure.
  • Fertilize as Needed: Depending on your plant’s needs, consider adding a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer to encourage growth, especially during the spring and summer.
  • Prune Regularly: Keep your plant healthy by removing dead or yellowing leaves and trimming back overgrown areas. Remember that yellow leaves will not turn green again, so prune them to allow the plant to focus on new growth.

By following these simple steps, you’ll set up your Bagoplant grow bag for success, creating a healthy environment for your houseplants to thrive. Embrace the joy of indoor gardening with Bagoplant and watch your green space flourish!

Happy planting! 🌱✨
